no sorrel in KCMO

In Uncategorized on 06/22/2012 by jenn in the yarden

Farmer Lew, of herb ‘n’ gardener, may not be growing any sorrel, but he’s got about six different varieties of kale on his Kansas City farmden. This fact required a change of mindset for me. I had always thought kale was a cool weather crop: I learned to eat it in the Netherlands(not a warm weather country!); I only grow it in the “winter”; and Ms. Welsh and Ms. Savio only talk about it with sweaters on!
So it was strange, but lovely, harvesting Winterbor, Toscano, and Red Russian kales in 90 degree weather for Friday night farmers market last week! While it’s too late and too crowded to plant any kales now, i will certainly consider sowing seed through April next year!

  1. I am so glad to know that, because i just bought an organic kale at TJ and thinking should this not be a “winter” veggie. But I like it and it is healthy so i am going to enjoy it in the mountains.
